CFD as a Decision Tool for Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant Flow Measurement Method

Suitable and accurate flow measurement in pumped storage hydropower plants (PSP) is a challenging task due to the entirely different hydraulic behaviour of penstock. This study presents novel approach choosing suitable method position. The focus on specific short penstock largest peak-load plant, Orlík, after its transformation PSP. Our based three main pillars: numerical modelling fluid (ANSYS CFX), standards, scientific literature. First, steady-state model output for current state compared historical measurements point velocities using meters measured losses Subsequently, planned conversion reversible Francis turbine, including shape modifications paths, steady simulation was performed both turbine pump modes.
